OakGlenn Winery

I love the view at OakGlenn Winery! OakGlenn's location is just stunning. The winery lies east of Hermann off of Highway 100. Look for the OakGlenn Place sign on the left side of the highway, then you'll wind through the woods for almost a mile on a gravel driveway to get there. The 8.5-acre vineyard stretches down a hillside overlooked by large seating decks and the Pavilion, which houses the tasting room and gift shop. There's a bar in the tasting room with beer and liquor for non-wine drinkers, and it gets good use every Saturday night, when bands come and provide live entertainment on an outdoor stage at the end of a long deck over the vineyard. The Missouri River bends around the vineyard in the background and adds to the great view.

OakGlenn also has a really interesting history. Owner Carolyn told me that the first homesteader on the property was German immigrant George Husmann, who planted a vineyard when he found how steep and rocky the land was. Husmann would later move to California and become a main developer of the wine industry in the Napa Valley area, now the most famed and successful wine region in America. Five rows of Norton vines planted by Husmann are still maintained by Carolyn and her husband Glenn today. There is a small museum about Hussman in the upstairs of the Pavilion.
